Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Commonly Asked Questions about Intense Pulsed Light

What is IPL™ (Intense Pulsed Light Therapy)?

IPL™ is a non-invasive procedure that uses pulsed light therapy to diminish signs of premature aging on your entire body. Many people come to our office and say "You mean you can get rid of these little red bumps on my stomach and you can get rid of these awful spider veins on my nose?" Yes, we can!

What can IPL™ treat?

IPL™ can treat many premature aging signs on face and on the entire body. What bothers you? Maybe you see dilated facial, spider veins, red, tiny 'cherry' blemishes often seen on the trunk area of the body, freckles, age spots, and general sun damage. The result is a more youthful, smooth and revitalized facial appearance. Past sun worshipers of the 1960's and 1970's now have a way to turn back the hands of time!

Why is IPL™ a good choice?

IPL™ is gentle, non-invasive and safe. Because of this, there is no "down time." You see results in the complexion and the skin texture of the entire face. You can return to your normal routines and activities immediately. In fact, many people even schedule their sessions during their lunch break. Additionally, IPL™ treatments are customized to your specific skin type and color, providing the best possible results.

Who is a candidate for this new procedure?

Whether you're a man or a woman, if you are showing the signs of aging and sun damaged skin, you should consider IPL™ to help you look as young and healthy as you feel. We can determine your specific needs with a brief consultation.

How is IPL™ performed?

Before treatment, a cold gel is usually applied to the area to be treated, and you will be given dark glasses to shield your eyes from the bright light. People often have a natural startle reflex to the light which is perfectly normal and to be expected.

During treatment, the smooth glass surface of the hand piece gently 'floats' above your skin, delivering pulses of light to the area being treated. The sensation is like that of a warm rubber band snap. For sensitive areas, a topical anesthetic cream may be purchased in advance for your comfort.

Treatments can range from a quick "spot treatment" to an hour long session where the entire face is treated. We will give you a better idea of what to expect at the time of your consult. For optimal results without side effects, a series of 3-5 treatments spaced 2-3 weeks a part are suggested.

After treatment, you can apply make-up and return to your normal routine. Some patients may have slight redness. A few patients may experience minor swelling. Although the side effects are minimal, please schedule your treatments around important social events.

How much does IPL™ cost? What is your clinical experience?
